British GTs set for Silverstone showdown.

The British GT Championship makes its sole visit to Silverstone this weekend, with two races on Sunday August 15.

The championship is currently being led by teenage sensation Jonathan Cocker (GruppeM Porsche 911 GT3-RSR) with his regular partner Tim Sugden lying just 26 points behind. Sugden missed the last rounds at Oulton Park due to racing in America. That means his title hopes are effectively over, but he will be playing a major role is helping Cocker take the crown.

Their main opposition comes from the Scuderia Ecosse Ferrari 360 GTC of Andrew Kirkaldy/Nathan Kinch that has taken three wins this year. The team has had its share of bad luck, but the two Scottish drivers make a formidable combination and should be bang on the pace at Silverstone.

So, too, should the John Guest-sponsored Porsche of Mike Jordan/Mark Sumpter that has taken two wins already this season. Jordan is set for a busy weekend as he will be tackling the Silverstone 1000 Kilometres for the new Le Mans Endurance Series on the eve of the British GT races.

Other teams capable of scoring a victory include the Eclipse Motorsport TVR T400R of Piers Johnson/Steve Hyde that won at Oulton Park, plus the Embassy Racing Chevrolet Corvette C5R of Neil Cunningham/Paula Cook and the Mosler of Richard Stanton/Patrick Pearce.

In the dailysportscar.com GT Cup, the diminutive Lotus Elise of Gavan Kershaw/Barrie Whight has taken three wins but may be a little breathless on the long Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. Opposition will come from the DRM Racing Ferrari of Ni Amorim/Adam Wilcox and the Marcos Mantis of Jon Finnemore/Chris Beighton, the Ferrari currently second in the class in the championship behind the Lotus team, although Wilcox/Amorim have yet to win this season.

Adam Sharpe is becoming a threat in his Tech 9 Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and he and co-driver Dominic Lesniewski will be front-runners at Silverstone.
